This Russian Girl I met on the train
On December 30, 2006 I sat next to
This Russian Girl, on the train.
I asked her if the train was a 10:38 AM one
While she was looking at the schedule.
She said, ‘excuse me?’
‘Oh, boy’ I said to myself
May be I shouldn’t talk again to
This Russian Girl I met on the train.
From her purse she takes out this book ‘Kite Runner’
And starts to read.
‘ I’ve read that book ’ I said.
‘My friend gave it to me’ she said.
Got engrossed in reading again
This Russian Girl I met on the train.
Well, I took my book ‘Grief Observed’ out
And began to read
May be doesn’t want to talk to me
This Russian Girl I met on the train.
Now she puts the book aside,
Gets busy with her make-up side.
She re-does her mascara,
Freshens up her face makeup
And puts her lipstick on
As I see from corner of my eyes.
‘Boy, how beautiful!’ is
This Russian Girl I met on the train
The train stops at Newark station
‘Is it New York?’
‘No’ I said ‘this is Newark,
New York is next’ I said to
This Russian Girl I met on the train
Now she said ‘you read this book?,
What do you think? It seems very well written’
‘Yes’ I said, ‘it’s simple but well written.
Reader visualizes the story while reading’.
And then, started talking
This Russian Girl I met on the train
Who I was?
‘Indian’ I said
She goes on and on
Praising Indian Temples in Chicago
(She is from Chicago)
Knows a lot about me now
This Russian Girl I met on the train
I am an MD, my son is an MD, and the other one is MBA
My wife passed away.
‘Your son is an MD? How old are you?’ she asks me.
I am 63, I said.
I must be in 40s, thinks
This Russian Girl I met on the train
‘Thank you’ I said, ‘you are very young too’
‘Yea, after I painted my face for half hour,
I am 40.’ So open, so honest, I like
This Russian Girl I met on the train
We kept talking nonstop.
At New York the train stopped, she did not.
We were last to get up and move to
Exit but kept talking.
I said ‘I wish we started talking early’
‘ I did not, ’cause I thought you may be
From Afghanistan and I was Russian’, said
This Russian Girl I met on the train
We talked and talked and came out on street
I didn’t want to stop and I think she didn’t too
Well I said, ‘nice talking to you.’
And wished Happy New Year and gave a hug to
This Russian Girl I met on the train
She said, ‘wish me luck’.
She must be going for an interview or something
‘Good luck to you’
I said and parted from
This Russian Girl I met on the train
I missed her whole day.
‘Damn!’ I said to myself.
I didn’t ask her name nor gave mine.
Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
I just have sweet face and 20 minute’s sweet memories of
This Russian Girl I met on the train.
